Well, it's that time of the year here at Kaiju Productions HQ, and we would like to impart some of tips to all of you in preparing an amazing Monster Bird for your family this Thanksgiving — which will make memories that last a lifetime (and beyond)! So, without further ado:

Cooking a Perfect Turkey Monster
Preparing and serving a centerpiece Turkey Monster can create anxiety for even the most seasoned cook. Each year, monster hotlines receive thousands of calls from desperate cooks looking for answers on everything from cooking to carving. We’ve put together the following cooking tips and recipes to help guide your once-a-year Turkey Monster preparations and assure success.

Choosing the Turkey Monster
Working with the highest quality ingredients makes it easier for any cook to produce a great meal. When ordering your whole turkey, allow at least 1 pound per person, plus 1/2 pound per person for leftovers. (Remember to take into account the size of your fridge and oven!) For Turkey Monster breast, plan on 3/4 pound per person. If it is a boneless breast, allow 1/2 pound per person.

To Stuff or Not To Stuff?
Stuffing is a matter of preference. If you do stuff, we advise baking the stuffing and turkey separately and then placing cooked stuffing in the Turkey Monster cavity during the final 10-30 hours of roasting time. Here are some additional stuffing tips:

Estimate about one cup of stuffing per pound of Turkey Monster.
Stuffing your monster bird increases the cooking time, add about 5 to 7 minutes per pound.
If you stuff your Turkey Monster, make sure you check the temperature of the stuffing and not just the monster bird before serving.
The stuffing must register at least 160°F before it is safe to eat.
Never stuff the monster bird ahead of time. Stuff it just before putting in the furnace.
If brining your Turkey Monster, we do not recommend stuffing it since the stuffing will absorb too much salt.
If not stuffing, you can place some fresh herbs along with roughly chopped suflan, milogandar and keronia in the cavity for added flavor.

General Turkey Monster Cooking Tips

Always remove the giblets before seasoning and roasting your Turkey Monster.
Refrigerate a fresh Turkey Monster immediately. Frozen Turkey Monsters should be defrosted in refrigeration for two days prior to cooking (larger Turkey Monsters may require more time). Do not thaw at room temperature.
Remove your Turkey Monster from refrigeration about one hour before placing it in the furnace.
Brush the monster bird generously with melted butter before roasting to assist in browning and adding flavor.
Baste only at the beginning of the roasting process. Basting later may make the skin soft instead of crispy.
Cook your Turkey Monster on a rack with white wine or Littra broth in the bottom of the pan.
Roast the bird monster with the breast side down for the first ten hours.
Use a monster thermometer for best results. When done, all parts of the Turkey Monster should be 165°F.
Save the drippings for gravy!
Allow monster bird to rest (covered) after cooking for about 30 minutes. This redistributes the juices and makes for smooth carving.

Turkey Monster Roasting Chart
All turkey roasting charts are basic approximations. Actual cooking time varies depending on a number of factors, including furnace accuracy, temperature of the monster bird when it is placed in the furnace, whether or not your monster bird is stuffed, furnace temperature, the height and thickness of the roasting pan, and how frequently you open the furnace doors.

Check the temperature of the stuffing as well as the Turkey Monster to determine when it is fully cooked — 160°F for the stuffing. When done, all parts of the Turkey Monster should register 165°F.

Weight Total = Roasting Time

100-120 tons = 20 to 30.5 hours
120-160 tons = 30 to 40 hours
160-200 tons = 40 to 50 hours
220-260 tons = 50 to 60 hours
260-300 tons = 60 to 70 hours
320-360 tons = 70 to 80 hours
380-420 tons = 90 to 100 hours

SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO: 2199 (2012) New TV Series Gets Theatrical Premiere!

After the last two years of major YAMATO revivals in the form of the feature-length animated follow-up to FINAL YAMATO (1983), SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO: RESURRECTION (2009), which was followed by big budget live-action mash-up SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO (2010; from Japanese Academy Award-winning director Takashi Yamazaki), there comes the news of another YAMATO production to debut this coming April: SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO: 2199! Shoji Nishizaki, the adopted son of the late YAMATO creator and producer, Yoshinobu Nishizaki. mentioned in the wake of the his father's untimely death last November, that their company, Enagio, would press on with new YAMATO productions, including an animated series. This past July, production designer Makoto Kobayashi announced at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, that the previously-mentioned series was indeed in pre-production, and that it was to be a remake of the original 1974 series.

After months of silence, on November 10th (Japan Time), a formal announcement was made to the Japanese Media, that YAMATO would be returning in the form of a theatrical release scheduled for April 7, 2012 (67 years to the date that the original IJN Battleship Yamato was sunk off of the coast of Okinawa). On November 11th, the first teaser trailer was revealed on the main official YAMATO website, "Yamato Crew", and the same day, the official website for YAMATO: 2199 also went live. Immediately, there was a flurry of chatter and speculation in fan communities on both sides of the Pacific as to the announcement of this theatrical movie, including disappointment that the promised television series had seemingly been dumped in favor of a feature film, while most were grateful that a new YAMATO was in the offing. Discussion of the teaser trailer also praised the animation, which confirmed that the original mecha designs of the Earth Defense Forces and the Gamilas Empire appeared mercifully unadulterated.

But, then more news was slyly revealed in the Member's Only sections of the Yamato Crew website:

Firstly, it was stated that YAMATO: 2199 would only be bowing in ten cinemas, nationwide, and that the total running time will be a mere 50 minutes in length (approximate). Why would they bother making such a short feature? Because, as it turns out, this theatrical movie is actually a special compilation of the first and second episodes of an all-new television series! That's right — YAMATO: 2199 is going to be a full-on television remake of the 1974 series! As I go to press with this news, there was no announcement as to the length of this new series or the network on which YAMATO: 2199 will be broadcast — but still, my fellow Yamato Fans, this is indeed the new television series that many of us have been hoping for!

According to the Yamato Crew website, the Supervising Director of the new series is the celebrated character designer and animation director Yutaka Izubuchi and the Character Designs were created by veteran Nobuteru Yuki. Izubuchi first cut his teeth as an Enemy Robot Designer on Toei's FIGHTING GENERAL DAIMOS and FUTURE ROBO: DALTANIOUS in 1979, while a member of Studio Nue, and during that same period, he was also affiliated with Aritsune Toyota's Creative Group, Parallel Creation (Toyota being one of the founding fathers of YAMATO). For YAMATO III (1980), Izubuchi designed both the Space Battleship Arizona and the Zeandora III, and also contributed to the mechanical designs of the Denguil Empire for FINAL YAMATO (1983).

A diehard fan of Anime and Tokusatsu, Izubuchi was tapped by Toei Producer Takeyuki Suzuki to design the villains for three consecutive Super Sentai Series, after he complained about the lackluster monster designs in GREATEST TASK FORCE: GOGGLE V (1982), starting with SCIENCE TASK FORCE: DYNAMAN (1983). Izubuchi quickly racked up his credits with scores of memorable mecha designs for Sunrise's BLUE GALE: XANBUNGLE (1982), AURA BATTLER: DUNBINE (1983), PANZER WORLD: GALIENT (1984), MACROSS: DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE? (1984), and went on to create mecha for numerous series and movies in the PATLABOR and GUNDAM franchises, and was the creator and director of RAHXEPHON (2002).

Perhaps best known to Old Skoolers for his work on MEGAZONE 23 (1985), Nobuteru Yuki started his professional career as an animator on SUPER DIMENSION CENTURY ORGUSS (1983). He built upon his portfolio as an manga artist and illustrator during the 1980s, as he was working on such television series as HEAVY METAL L-GAIM (1984) and DIRTY PAIR (1985), and feature films such as MACROSS: DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE? (1984) and ROYAL SPACE FORCE: THE WINGS OF HONNÊAMISE (1987). In addition to his prolific Anime credentials, Yuki has also created illustrations for numerous publications, as well as being a noted cover artist for fantasy and science fiction novels. He has also served as a designer for such video games as Chrono Cross and Solatorobo: Red the Hunter. Yuki is best known to younger Anime fans as the character designer for THE VISION OF ESCAFLOWNE (1996) and MAKEN-KI! (2011).

The animation for YAMATO: 2199 is being produced by Xebec Inc. and AIC. As a subsidiary of Production I.G. (whose many credits include the animated segment of KILL BILL VOL. 1 and BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE), Xebec's purpose is to handle the production of TV Anime, and their long list of titles include MARTIAN SUCCESSOR NADESICO (1996) and HEROIC AGE (2007). In 2011 alone, Xebec produced three Anime series, BREAK BLADE, RIO: RAINBOW GATE, and SOFTENNI. AIC (or Anime International Company) was founded in 1982, and have worked on dozens of productions, including major benchmark titles in the 1980s, such as the MEGAZONE 2-3, ICZER-1, and BUBBLEGUM CRISIS OVA series. Still going strong in 2011, AIC produced the series R-15, WANDERING SON, PERSONA 4: THE ANIMATION, and I DON'T HAVE MANY FRIENDS.

As of this writing, there is no further information on the names of the other principals involved in the production, including screenwriters, voice actors, or music composers. Interestingly, the teaser trailer features music by the late Hiroshi Miyagawa, the famed composer whose scores are synonymous with YAMATO. Is it possible that cues from the original score, or new arrangements of those scores, could be incorporated — perhaps under the baton of Miyagawa's son, Akira, who has followed in his father's footsteps? As for the voice actors, can we hope for some of original surviving thesps to return to their much-beloved roles? Some returned for YAMATO: RESURRECTION... I mean, we can't have another voice actor for Dessler other than Masato Ibu, can we?

Watch out, Bay Area, I'm back on local TV... Run! The locally-produced horror host show, Creepy KOFY Movie Time, has been a big hit on recently independent station, KOFY TV-20, here in foggy San Francisco. Set in the cave of Balrock de Cavo, an adolescent demon, and his undead pal, Noname Kegerator, the pair throw a party every Saturday night with, not only the monster movies you'd expect to see, but guests, skits, comedians, bands, burlesque girls, more girls, and beer. Lots of it. It's an untamed version of the hosted horror show, and draws more from KOFY's late night drunk fest, "The Sleazy Arms Hotel", hosted by James Gabbert in the '80s, than it does Bob Wilkins' family-friendly "Creature Features".

After several years of success, now they've invited me on the show to surely send CKMT into the toilet when the ratings take a nosedive as soon as I appear on-screen tonight to talk about MONSTER FROM A PREHISTORIC PLANET (1967). I had a great time visiting the studio after all these years — I grew up about eight blocks away from this station, which used to carry the call letters KEMO in the '60s and '70s (and as kids, we used to dumpster dive for whatever "treasures" they threw away, including Commercials on 16mm reels). The staff, from the front desk to the director, were all great, and the atmosphere on the set was relaxed, but still raucous! Hosts Noname and Balrock were amiable and gregarious, and the laughs and the beer flowed all afternoon.

As it turns out, the place was full of people I knew, who came down to hang out, or appear in their own segments, like Michael Monahan and Lon Huber — who came to debut their first publishing venture, a fantastic book on the history of Bay Area Horror Hosts, "Shock It To Me! Golden Ghouls of the Golden Gate" (currently available from UHF Nocturne). Some of the other freaks in the studio included former "Creature Features" host and author, John Stanley, the lovely Miss Misery, Sgt. Pffier of the Surf/Garage band, Beachkrieg, and the list goes on. For the show, I brought down some international movie posters for the film (and the cool art piece illustrating this entry) as well as repros of cardboard theater giveaway Gappa masks that originated from the Philippines!

The segment, like all of the segments on CKMT, are relatively short — keeping in line with the show's machine-gun etiquette — but it was a lot of fun and a lot of laughs, and I can't wait to go back on the show! The MONSTER FROM A PREHISTORIC PLANET episode of CKMT will air tonight, Saturday, November 5th at 11pm (PST). So, tune in and drop dead for KOFY TV's Creepy KOFY Movie Time — don't miss it or you'll make Gappa angry!

This past July, actor Takeshi Yoshioka, who starred as Gamu Takayama in Tsuburaya Productions' popular 1998 television series, ULTRAMAN GAIA, visited the US with his wife, Aiko, of the twin pop act, Flip-Flap. The couple was married in 2009, and spent two years planning their Honeymoon vacation — landing in New York, and on to stops in Nigara Falls, Chicago, and Florida. From there, they rented a car and drove though the South to California, including stops in San Francisco and Southern California. Since this wasn't a professional visit, we were asked not to promote or advertise their trip, or to organize any fan meetings — this was their Honeymoon, after all.

My cohort, Dave Chapple (not to be confused with the slightly more famous comedian of nearly the same name), was contacted about their their trip and arrival in California, and was told to take care of them. After the couple's visit to San Francisco, including an afternoon at Japantown, the Yoshioka's headed south to Palm Springs to spend five days at Casa de Chapple. In 2005, Godzilla suit actor, Tsutomu "Tom" Kitagawa, stayed with Dave for the same stretch, while he was in the US promoting GODZILLA FINAL WARS (which is a completely different story that needs to be told). Dave's reputation for his intuitive understanding of Japanese customs and decorum is well-known among many tokusatsu actors and their agents in Japan, so it is no surprise that he was entrusted with hosting the Yoshiokas at his home in Palm Springs.

While at Casa de Chapple, Dave entertained the Yoshiokas and visited some of the great restaurants and hot spots which Palm Springs is renown for (and if you've ever been to Palm Springs, you know how hot it can be). Part of their plan, while staying with Dave, was to visit Hollywood, San Diego and Tijuana. Since Dave was well aware of their tight schedule, he suggested an alternative: a trip Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead would perhaps be a better trip, with the few remaining days they had left in the US. The couple agreed, and so Dave drove them up to Big Bear Mountain for the day, which they said that they would never forget. Departing Dave's house, the couple still ended up sightseeing in Hollywood on the way to Los Angeles International Airport. The Yoshioka's had a blast on their American journey, and they thanked Dave for making it even better with his hospitality and humor — Dave's just that cool.

It's not everyone that can say that Ultraman Gaia swam in their pool!

Yesterday, I posted the fantastic news that the Criterion Collection had slyly announced, with a simple photo, that they will be prepping a DVD/BD release of the original Japanese version of GODZILLA aka GOJIRA (1954) — see previous blog post — and while, it seems, that Honda's seminal film will be getting a much-needed restoration, some have been asking if the corresponding US version helmed by Terry O. Morse, GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS! (1956), starring Raymond Burr, will be included in this release. Previous home video releases of this film — and all versions screened on television, cable, and online in the last 30 years — have been culled from the same, edited telecine transfer of a 35mm master, prepared in the early 1980s by Henry G. Saperstein's UPA (United Productions of America). Unfortunately, Toho has nothing for the US version (barring the cropped "cinemascope" version released in Japan in the late 1950s), and since there was nothing else readily available, Classic Media used this very same three decade-old transfer for their 2006 release.

What was deleted? UPA's transfer is missing the original "A Transworld Release" logo at the top of the film (printed over Toho's sunburst logo), seen in early television versions (before UPA's acquisition), a starring and directed by card after the opening title, and the original — and full — ending credits sequence, which appeared between the fade out and "The End" title card. While Classic Media's release, reinstates the original ending credits sequence (taken from a 16mm print owned by a private collector), it was placed after the "The End" title card. But, the other two deletions remained absent. While several fans have 16mm prints of the initial television transfer of GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS! (from a Reduction Negative) — some complete, others not — the search for original 35mm negative elements, or at the very least, an uncut 35mm theatrical print, had proved to be elusive. While there are several private (and notable) collectors who do have 35mm prints of this film, most of them wish to remain nameless, out of fear that these prints will be confiscated (which has indeed happened to collectors in the past).

So, Criterion put the call out to film collectors, everywhere, to help locate 35mm elements for GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS! Startlingly, within 24 hours, through the auspices of several fans — working together and respecting the anonymity of the source — according to "insiders", a veritable Rosetta Stone, something far better than a 35mm print has been located: A 35mm Fine-Grain Print! "So, what does that mean?", you might ask. It's actually quite big deal, really. Why? The following explanation is from the article, "Duped Negatives" and "Lavender Prints": Understanding Film Restoration from The Picture Show Man:

Sometimes called a "fine-grain sub-master", or "protection print", or "lavender print", or "purple print" (because the fine-grains of the film have a slightly purple color to them). These are positive prints, made from either camera negatives or dupe (duplicate) negatives, using film that has a low contrast, extremely fine-grained emulsion. They are made expressly and exclusively for the purpose of making another dupe negative, and are not meant to be shown. (In fact, the projected image quality of these prints is poor compared to a timed projection print, and the perforations have a slightly different shape than projection prints.)

In plain English, this means that the next best thing to finding an original Interpositive (the first "positive print" made from the Camera Negative) — a first-generation print! So, while celebrating this early may be premature, I'm going to start popping the Champagne corks (or maybe some Champipple) — because a transfer from this Fine-Grain should prove to be stunning in comparison to what has been previously available to us, especially once such a transfer gets a Criterion Touch digital restoration! Many of you out there may not quite grasp the monumental thing that has happened here. This is an earth-shaking, screen-shattering thrill! This is big news, towering and tremendous — akin to the discovery of a Missing Link — and is more fantastic than I ever thought possible, to paraphrase Burr's character in GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS!

In the meantime, while the pieces fall into place, let's just keep our fingers crossed for Criterion, but not hold our collective breath (we don't want to jinx this, do we?). But still, so far, this really has been a "tale to stun the mind!"

CRITERION PREPPING "GODZILLA" (1954)! DVD & BD Release Coming Soon?

Thanks to several insiders associated with the Criterion Collection, I was notified several months ago that Janus Films had acquired the rights to the original GODZILLA (1954), for a possible — and proper — DVD & BD release in the near future. More tell-tale signs that this was indeed a strong possibility, appeared on Criterion's Hulu page earlier this summer, which began offering free viewings of the Americanized version of the original, GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS! (1956), starring Raymond Burr. This was shortly, and unceremoniously, joined by the original, uncut Japanese version with English Subtitles (both were available for free viewing without a subscription to Hulu Plus). Perhaps this was a teaser of something in the works? Could it be a dream coming true after 20 years: A deluxe, Criterion Collection Edition of GODZILLA, Spine #600?

"He must've had too much Sake."

Fans began speculation, in which some self-procalimed "authorities" doubted this possibility (citing Classic Media's licenses to both versions) or speculated/proclaimed that Criterion would only be able to gain access to Toho's recent HD Broadcast masters (used for their domestic BD releases, which still falls short of a very much needed complete restoration), fundamentally underestimating the core of what makes Criterion/Janus Films tick. Then, without warning, both films were pulled from Criterion's Hulu page as rumors (from insider sources) mounted that Criterion was indeed plotting to unleash both films on Home Video. Then, this afternoon, Criterion posted a cryptic photo of a film can — emblazoned in Japanese writing — on their Official Facebook page, which received over a hundred "likes", and numerous comments, all within two hours. Few could read the label on the film can — which translates: "Dupe Posi(tive): GODZILLA. Reel 2 of 10 Reels. Toho Company, Ltd."!

"You have your fear, which might become reality; and you have Godzilla, which is reality."

This immediately washes away any concerns over such a forthcoming release being a shovelware port of the Japanese BD or an upgrade from the aforementioned HD Broadcast Master from Toho — it would appear that Criterion is going to master this from the Interpositive elements! Such a move bodes well for a long overdue and desperately needed restoration for a film that suffers from a number of physical blemishes and damage, beyond the insulting "spackling" done with DVNR (digital video noise reduction) filtering — hardly addressing the real issues the original negative suffers from. If Criterion can conjure the same painstaking and meticulous alchemy bestowed upon their release of Kurosawa's timeless masterpiece, SEVEN SAMURAI (1954), which also suffered from many of the same ills as GODZILLA, then both cinephiles and genre fans, alike, will have a much justified reason to celebrate: A proper presentation to honor the legacies of Ishiro Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya — at long last.

Well, it's that time of the year again in Chicago... G-Fest, North America's only convention devoted to the Kaiju Eiga (or Japanese Monster Movie) milieu returns to the Crowne Plaza Chicago O'Hare in Rosemont, Illinois this weekend — right outside of Chicago — now in it's 18th year (!). This year's guests include actor Hiroyuki Watanabe (Gamera Trilogy, Ultraman Gaia, Karate Robo: Zaborgar), Director and Visual Effects Wizard Shinji Higuchi (Gamera Trilogy, Sinking of Japan, The Last Princess), Miniature Builder and Toy Sculptor Hiroshi Sagae, Android M-11 himself, Robert Scott Field (Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah), and yours truly.

Other notable celebrities will include award-winning artist Bob Eggleton (where do we start with this guy?), illustrator Matt Frank (Godzilla: Legends!), Damon Foster (Oriental Cinema), and Edward Holland (Monster Attack Team).

Last Fall, celebrated artist (my pal and fellow Godzilla freak), Bob Eggleton, and I were approached by the publisher of the latest incarnation Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, Phil Kim, to put together an "All Japanese Monsters Issue" akin to the legendary Famous Monsters #114, published in 1975 — which was the best-selling issue in their history. During our two-hour conference call, the three of us geeked out on what made that issue so special, and how this "FM #114 for the 21st Century" could do the same. So, as the Contributing Editor, I lined up a veritable "A-Team" of fans who never seem to get enough of the spotlight for their expertise, contributions, and efforts to promote Japanese Fantasy Films and Television outside of Japan. After giving them their assignments, I handed them over to FM's claws-on editor with flair, Ed Blair. All of them did a killer job on their pieces, and together, we created a solid, updated bookend to the 1975 issue. A Kaiju Eiga 101 for a new generation.

Our FM #256 A-Team included Edward L. Holland (founder of Monster Attack Team) on KIKAIDA, David McRobie (creator of Xenorama) on the original Gamera films (with a sidebar on Shusuke Kaneko's Gamera trilogy by Jason Varney), Roy Ware (founder of Black Sun) on JOHNNY SOKKO AND HIS FLYING ROBOT, Jim Cirronella (producer of Autopsy of the Dead) on ULTRA Q, Philip Nino Tan-Gatue on how the Super Robot genre spawned Transformers, Artist Matt Frank on IDW's new Godzilla comic, and David Eric Dopko on Collecting Japanese Monster Toys. Bob Eggleton also provides a piece on how much he loves Godzilla (and that's a lot), while yours truly provided ramblings on Eiji Tsuburaya and the Honda-Tsuburaya Godzilla films, snagged an exclusive interview with Godzilla himself, Haruo Nakajima (with some great photos by Chris Mirjahangir and an tremendous title page by Jolyon B. Yates), and got to gush about the thing that got me into this whole mess: ULTRAMAN! We even ran the original Forrest J. Ackerman article which ignited the crazy myth that there were "two endings" filmed for KING KONG VS. GODZILLA — and last, but not least — none other than John Carpenter, the Master of Horror himself, dropped us some kind words about Japanese Monsters!

Working on a breakneck deadline, we pulled everything together like Baron Frankenstein, gathered up some terrorific images, let the layout people do their thing, proofs, and then... viola! We're done and the final is off to the printers... and we all waited for the June release date to see just how this Nipponese monster melange has congealed. Then, we received a message from the man at the top of the stairs, Phil Kim, who brings us some startling news: "Before it has even hit the stands, FM #256 is SOLD OUT!" We were stunned. Elated. Flabbergasted. History had repeated itself, and then-some! The Newsstand version (sporting a Transformers 3 cover by Paul Gerrard) had sold out from the publisher, and copies of Bob Eggleton Godzilla cover edition (available through Diamond Distributors) were filled and those in the hands of FM's own Captain Company were running dangerously low. And it didn't take long for those remaining 150 copies to fly out into the mail faster than Rodan on a rampage, thus placing FM #256 into the history books as another benchmark for the legendary magazine — grab one while you can!

The question now is, can King Ghidorah's lightning strike thrice? Well, as the old saying goes, only time, and a certain Venusian Prophetess, will tell!

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 VS. GAMERA! Shout!'s Boxset Touches Down August 2, 2011!

Santa Monica-based label, Shout! Factory has finally cleared the way for the release of what some may believe is the greatest (or worse) riff on Japanese Monster Movies, ever — MST3K Vol. XX: "MST3K vs. Gamera"! That's right, all of the inept Sandy Frank versions of Daiei's classic Gamera series as they were ripped on MST3K, complete and uncut, all in one special tin box set dropping on August 2, 2011. The set will sport five discs featuring experiments 302: GAMERA (1991-06-08), 304: GAMERA VS. BARUGON (1991-06-22), 308: GAMERA VS. GAOS (1991-07-20), 312: GAMERA VS. GUIRON (1991-09-07) and 316: GAMERA VS. ZIGRA (1991-10-19). These films should also be special to hardcore Misties, since they were also featured during the original (and legendary) KTMA-TV's "Season 0" episodes.

The Special Features for MST3K Vol. XX: "MST3K vs. Gamera" will include these on-screen featurettes: "So Happy Together: A Look Back at MST3K and Gamera", "Gamera vs. The Chiodo Brothers", "Gamera Obscura: A Brief History by August Ragone" (hey, that's me!), as well as the original Japanese trailers & five limited-edition mini-posters by artist Steve Vance. This past April, while attending the "Monsterpalooza" convention in Burbank (we brought over Godzilla himself, Haruo Nakajima, for the show), I was interviewed by Shout! Factory's Jordan Fields, way up in a secluded hacienda in the Hollywood Hills. Keeping things light, I talked about the origins of Gamera, how the films were received in Japan, and how they were released in the US before Sandy Frank. I also spoke about how MST3K has kept Gamera in the public eye, and why we should thank Sandy Frank. Seriously.

MST3K Vol. XX: "MST3K vs. Gamera" is currently available for pre-order from a number of online retail sites, including Amazon.com, with an MSRP of $64.99. I predict that this will be one of the biggest-selling of all MST3K sets to date, and I urge you to order your own copy ASAP — because if you miss it, you'll spin right into orbit, just like that colossal turtle meat-filled chelonian himself!

It was in-between shots being taken by our photographer, Chris Mirjahangir, that I was able to catch this awesome candid of the man who played Godzilla, wearing an authentic Cowboy Hat (given to him by Texan, Brad Thompson)!

The "Man of a Thousand Monsters" will be signing autographs all three days, and will also be on stage for two presentations over the weekend, speaking about his experiences in bringing these characters to life — including the various accidents and injuries he sustained while taking on the roles of Rodan, Varan, Baragon, Green Gargantua, and many other titanic terrors, as — arguably — the world’s foremost monster suit actor.

ROBERT DUNHAM'S DAUGHTER SPEAKS OUT! The MEGALON DVD Debacle Thickens...

The MEGALON DVD plot thickens... In their story refuting my initial report, a separate inquiry to Emiko Jade Frost (the daughter of the late actor Robert Dunham, who was featured in GODZILLA VS. MEGALON) was used to contradict my "inside information" on a planned DVD release of MEGALON. Disgusted by the situation, and how it was being spun to make me look like the April's Fool, she has come out and identified herself as my source.

So, here she is in her own words — posted on my Facebook page this morning — those who still care, can draw their own conclusions (if this hasn't put you all to sleep, that is):

I am Robert Dunham's daughter and I am going to clear up the rumors, once and for all. About a month ago, I was told by someone that they were working on getting "Godzilla vs. Megalon" released on DVD. I had been asked if I wanted to include one of my father's un-released movies as a bonus feature. (I am not going to say who told me this.) Later, I received an email from Keith Aiken, stating that he had read on various forums, that "Godzilla vs Megalon" was going to be released. He asked me if I knew anything about it and if I was going to be adding anything to the movie. At the time, I told him that I didn't know anything about it. I wasn't sure what the nature of his relationship was, with the person who told me - so I kept my mouth shut.

Ever since I created my father's FB fan page, I have noticed a lot of "tension" between certain groups of "fandom" people. For some reason, one side has felt the need to tell me who to like and not like, due to some "differences" they have had in the past. I really don't give a shit, because I will "like" whomever I choose. But it seems all one sided, to me. The other group, the one who are always getting talked down about to me - have had nothing bad to say about this other group. I don't like to get in the middle of these things but it's the group that is doing the complaining, who have consistently shown to me, how childish they are.

Some of you saw what happened between me and [name omitted]. I personally think he's an asshole but hey, that's just me. He is one of the many, who sit there and talk about their OWN friends behind their backs to me and to other people ~ yet they go on trips to Japan with them. It doesn't make any fucking sense. I am sick of hearing about it and it's really fucking immature. What August has been saying, is true. Now, it's just a matter of what was told to me and IF that was true. It doesn't make any sense, why I would be asked to add a bonus feature to a movie, that isn't going to be released. (I was never told to keep this a secret, so when I heard the news, I told a few people.)

What kind of pisses me off, is that I was asked to add the bonus feature but then told, that I wouldn't receive any money for it. Now, why would I just give Media Blasters, one of my Dad's movies to add as a bonus feature for FREE? They'd be making a killing on the movie and I would get nothing? Fuck that! Later, I was told that I would get a little something, but not much. WHY?? So, I have decided NOT to give them the movie and release it myself. At least then, I would know I'd be getting the proceeds and not someone else. I hope I have cleared that up for everyone. Thank you!

"GODZILLA VS. MEGALON" DVD A HOAX? Pie In My Eye? Or Much To Do About Nothing?

Apparently, there is a contradictory report posted by another website about the previously entry concerning an upcoming GODZILLA VS. MEGALON DVD, alleging that was never happening in the first place. This is curious, because my source claims there were active inquiries asking for their participating in providing materials for a proposed set of special features, and that an audio commentary was mentioned. While I was asked to keep the identity of my source secret, I do have several e-mails which are contrary to these dismissals. I could have attempted to save face by saying, "I know I said that this wasn't an April's Fool joke, but it was — gotcha!", but that's not me.

Sure, I could have contacted Media Blasters or Toho for some kind of confirmation, but as is usually the case with private business dealings — before official announcements are made — if you're not involved on either the Licensor's or the Licensee's side, they will either blow you off or tell you to mind your own business. Or deny it altogether. So, was my source mistaken? Did those who were seeking my source's participation, lie? Was this an "elaborate hoax"? Or was this done to make me look silly? Or to "discredit" me? (Can you feel my eyes rolling into the back of my head?)

I certainly don't feel silly, nor angry, embarrassed, or remotely upset. Rather, I find this pretty insidiously funny, actually. "Sh*t happens", as they say. Now, whatever the case may be, I'm sure that it will "all come out in the wash". Surprisingly, this turgid soap opera actually has become far more interesting that the original subject of the story. Or is it? Again, I do have those e-mails from my source, which would open about a dozen can of worms... But, would that really be worth it? I leave that to the individual to decide. As for me, it looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines!

"GODZILLA VS. MEGALON" COMING TO R1 DVD! First Official Home Video Release In The Works

Right off of the bat, I have to begin by stating that this is not some April Fool's post. Now, after more than three decades of questionable cropped and dupey public domain copies of Jun Fukuda's ultimate kids monster movie, GODZILLA VS. MEGALON (1973) is finally getting the deluxe, anamorphic release that it deserves, according to some sources. Sure, most serious Godzilla fans seem to revile its mere existence, because of its singular attempt at imitating the colorful, kinetic, and psychotronic Terebi Manga and Henshin Hero programs which had taken over the Japanese airwaves and seized the minds of tens of millions of viewers, at that time. Hence the faux Ultraman stand-in, Jet Jaguar. While it was a far cry from the original GODZILLA (1954), MEGALON was emblematic of trends in Japanese pop culture in the early-to-mid 1970s.

After the release of DESTROY ALL MONSTERS in 1968, Producer Tomoyuki Tanaka thought that if Godzilla were to continue, the films would be specifically made and marketed to children. Starting in 1969, with the release of Honda's GODZILLA'S REVENGE the subsequent films were issued as part of Toho's "Champion Festivals", a package of cartoons and re-edited kaiju eiga to keep kiddies occupied for hours, while their mothers shopped in peace. While it is far more polished than its predecessor, GODZILLA VS. GIGAN (1972), MEGALON is far more juvenile — like a kid's daydream — right in step with Tanaka's dictum. While the battlefields are sparse, and the city-destruction relegated to stock footage, there are some nice miniature effects (the destruction of the dam), with impressive photography by Yuzuru Aizawa (DESTROY ALL MONSTERS).

As for the proposed upcoming release, according to a relative of one of the people who worked on MEGALON, a licensed Special Edition is being prepped, and will be replete with special features — including an audio commentary — which are underway or being negotiated for this proposed anamorphic release for the US market. It is not known whether MEGALON will be issued on DVD and/or Blu-ray at this writing, but we have been told that the film has is being licensed by Media Blasters. The New Jersey-based label made a mark issuing a number of classic Toho Fantasy Films, including THE MYSTERIANS (1957), MATANGO (1963), and ATRAGON (1963). Previously, MEGALON was offered to Sony, when they picked up a number of Godzilla titles for release in 2004/05, but passed due to a glut of public domain releases.

In any case, will GODZILLA VS. MEGALON finally be released in all of its scrumtrulescent glory for American fans to rejoice? Toho is notorious for being difficult to work with and Media Blasters' recent stability has been in question, so let's hope that they both can come to a quick agreement and get the wheels on this running as soon as possible. Personally, I can't wait to see a visibly embarrassed Robert Dunham wearing a silky toga and silver tiara in glorious HD, and turn up the volume on legendary vocalist Masato Shimon singing "Godzilla & Jaguar, Punch! Punch! Punch!" — and let myself be transported back to 1976, when things were more simpler and sweeter for children, and Godzilla was our undefeatable King of the Monsters!

From March 9th-19th at the Japan Society of New York, the Globus Film Series presents the Japanese gangster movie genre through its various avatars, transformations and contradictions, from 1960s productions featuring chivalrous kimono-clad, sword-wielding gangsters and gamblers to today's ruthless gun-toting villains dealing in debt, hustling hardcore porn and scheming and scamming in dark trades and deeds. Over the past 50 years, they've remained snarling, swaggering, tattooed and inexplicably sexy.

The violent romantic world of the yakuza (the Japanese mafia) steeped in cryptic ritual and customs involving full-body tattoos and missing digits, has long excited the imagination, decades before viewers started existing on a diet of The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire melodrama, and has been one of the mainstays of the Japanese film industry since the 1960s. Harking back to the days when samurai still embodied traditionalist values of honor, selfless duty (giri) and the noble warrior spirit (ninkyo) on the silver screen, the shadowy demimonde of organized crime (which included wandering gamblers and lowly peddlers) rivaled with the noble swordsmen as the representatives of honor and heroism, in the context of a rapidly changing society trying to come to terms with a shameful defeat. In the darkness of movie theaters, they became the very picture of superhuman macho cool and reptilian menace.

In the line-up, there will be blood and broken bones, hookers and hopheads, and plenty of juicy political blackmail… in 15 films that rack up the stiffs like Jacobean tragedies and show grand visions of manly amity and betrayal: classics and lesser known titles by Kinji Fukasaku, Takashi Miike (Dead or Alive), Hideo Gosha (The Wolves), Takeshi Kitano (Outrage), Rokuro Mochizuki (A Yakuza In Love, Onibi: The Fire Within) and Sydney Pollack (The Yakuza), among other offerings you can't refuse.

My personal recommendations for this festival, lays squarely on the shoulders of the pre-1980s films, produced during the prolific Golden Age of Japanese Cinema. These include Hideo Gosha's THE WOLVES (1971), Teruo Ishii's THE WALLS OF ABASHIRI PRISON 3: LONGING FOR HOME (1965), Kiyoshi Saeki's BRUTAL TALES OF CHIVALRY (1965), Tadashi Sawashima's THEATER OF LIFE: HISHAKAKU (1963), Tai Kato's BLOOD OF REVENGE (1965), Kinji Fukasaku's COPS VS. THUGS (1975), Fukasaku's THE YAKUZA PAPERS 3: PROXY WAR (1973), Seijun Suzuki's YOUTH OF THE BEAST (1963) — even Sydney Pollack's THE YAKUZA (1975), which teams up Ken Takakura and Robert Mitchum, is a must-see!

INTO THE PAST WITH "FAMOUS MONSTERS #70"! I Review DESTROY ALL MONSTERS In 1970!

Last fall, I was contacted to contribute an article for a retro-style issue of Famous Monsters of Filmland, which would fill in the gap of the original "missing issues" (#70-#79). This was, according to legend, because the original founder and publisher, James Warren, hoped to reach #100 ten issues sooner to help with flagging sales (which were soon boosted by a Horror film revival in the early '70s). So, the publishing and editorial staff of the current incarnation of the classic magazine, decided to go forward to the past — having these issues set in the original dateline in which they would have been released, and that the writing should reflect not only the FM style of the 1970s, but also that all of the content be in-period.

I was told that they already had the perfect article in mind for me, a feature review on DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (1968), which would have been making US theatrical rounds in 1969 and 1970. Always having wanted to write for FM, I immediately said, "What's the deadline?" The resultant feature is heavily illustrated with a number of stills (including a couple of behind-the-scenes shots and storyboards), and even features an original sketch of the Moonlight SY-3 spacecraft, personally drawn for me by the late art director, Mutsumi Toyoshima, who created it! One of the most misunderstood and maligned films in the Godzilla series; KING KONG VS GODZILLA had a most bizarre and unfortunate genesis. But, that's Hollywood for you... In the late 1950s, visual effects master Willis O'Brien (King Kong) found no luck in pitching his latest idea, "King Kong vs. Frankenstein", to studios, but it did catch the attention of former Universal producer John Beck. Beck took on the project, but also found it tough going until he came to Toho Studios, who were interested in a return vehicle for Godzilla (and another spectacle for their 30th Anniversary roster, which included Hiroshi Inagaki's CHUSHINGURA). Beck was able to convince Toho to foot the entire licensing fees for King Kong, which amounted to 80 million yen (approximately $250,000 USD in 1962; adjusted to current inflation, approximately $1.8 million USD), which was three times the cost of the average Toho production at the time — this hefty price tag allowed Toho the rights to the character for five years. Almost immediately, the studio execs began slashing the film’s budget, and one of the first things cut were Producer Tomoyuki Tanaka’s plans to shoot the Farou Island scenes on location in Sri Lanka (instead, they shot the scenes on Oshima Island, 62 miles offshore from Tokyo).

Keeping the budget restrictions in mind, director Ishiro Honda, visual effects director Eiji Tsuburaya, and scenarist Shinichi Sekizawa envisioned an entertainment picture along the lines of MOTHRA (1961), and screenwriting began in earnest. Cast in the lead was popular actor and comedian, Tadao Takashima (EMPEROR MEIJI AND THE RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR, 1957), the father of actors Masanobu (GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE, 1989) and Masahiro (GODZILLA VS. DESTROYAH, 1995). He was paired with Yu Fujiki (SAMURAI II: DUEL AT ICHIJOJI TEMPLE, 1955), another comic genius, who was the unbilled "Eiko Maru" radio operator in the original GODZILLA — Honda would cast them together again in ATRAGON (1963). Actresses Mie Hama (THE MERCILESS TRAP, 1961) and Akiko Wakabayashi (AKIKO, 1961) became superstars in their own right, and shared the distinction of becoming "Bond Girls" in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967). Wakabayashi gave up acting when she was married in 1968, while Hama pressed on, and is still active today. RODAN's star, Kenji Sahara, plays Hama's inventor boyfriend in a supporting role. Mr. Tako, the greedy Advertising executive, was played by Ichiro Arishima (YOUNG BLOOD IS BURNING, 1947), a physical comedian who was beloved by audiences as the "Japanese Chaplin", and was featured in over a hundred popular films and television shows.

The infamous Kong suit was not up to the par of what Toho's effects department could accomplish, especially in light of the rather effective Abominable Snowman in Honda’s HALF HUMAN (1955), due to the budget cutbacks imposed because of the high fees in securing the rights to the character. Even so, two suits were constructed, as well as several puppets — apparently, Tsuburaya wanted this incarnation of Kong to appear comical. On the other hand, Godzilla appears more powerful than before, and established the "classic" look of the 1960s. While the miniature sets were as elaborate as ever, with mountains and rivers, Tsuburaya chose to shoot much the action at normal speed, which doesn't always allow these characters the illusion of mass and size. Tsuburaya also permitted suit actors Haruo Nakajima and Shoichi Hirose to freely choreograph their fight scenes, and they chose Pro Wrestling, which was extremely popular in Japan at the time, and actually came up with some memorable — if outrageous — fight tactics. Still, Honda's version is fast, furious, and entertaining as all get-out, and was never intended to be taken as seriously the original GODZILLA. Sekizawa wrote a satire on the rise of rampant commercialization in Japan, also reflected in Yazuo Masumura's GIANTS AND TOYS (1958), which is not apparent in Beck's version, and is neutered beyond reproach.

The unintentionally laughable scenes for the US version were amateurishly shot by the unremarkable actor-turned-director Thomas “Tom” Montgomery (The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, 1961), and were cut haphazardly into Honda's, thus eliminating wonderful sequences from the original, to make room for Michael Keith (The Man and the Challenge, 1960) as the smug "UN Reporter Eric Carter", Harry Holcombe (Kisses for My President, 1964) as clueless "Dr. Arnold Johnson", and James Yagi (Bridge to the Sun, 1961) as the lost "UN Reporter Yutaka Omura". All save for Akira Ifukube's Farou Island music, the maestro's thunderous stereo score was jettisoned whole by Beck — only to be replaced by jarring Universal library cues because they sounded less "Oriental" (culled from Creature From the Black Lagoon and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man). Apparently, Beck (who produced this version for $15,000 and pre-sold it to Universal-International for $200,000) never understood the film, and didn’t seem to catch on that it was done as a satire. This was somewhat typical of the mishandling of these films in the early years, and why they are so misunderstood outside of Japan.

Ironically, KING KONG VS. GODZILLA became the highest ticket-selling film of the entire Godzilla series in Japan (11.2 million tickets), while the US version broke summer box office records for Universal-International the following year. For stealing his idea, O'Brien filed a suit against Beck, but couldn't afford to keep a lawyer to follow through, and passed away before the film was released in the States. In the final outcome, it seems that John Beck was perhaps the most terrible monster of all.

SCI-FI REVOLTECH No. 004: BARAGON Kaiyodo’s Subterranean Monster Figure

Kaiyodo, an Osaka-based hobby purveyor, and a prominent fixture in the Garage Kit movement, has become a player in the Japanese toy industry — establishing themselves with such great lines as Revoltech (articulated super robot figures from various Anime series) — has launched a new Revoltech line of figures from live action films and television series. These include such popular franchises as Batman, Alien, Predator, Nightmare Before Christmas, and also such classics as Ray Harryhausen’s Jason and the Argonauts. Of course, the Sci-Fi Revoltech line also includes characters and vehicles from Toho and Daiei’s famous monster movie franchises.

The first of these I will be reviewing, courtesy of Toy Freakz, is "Sci-Fi Revoltech No. 004: Baragon" — the subterranean monster from the 1965 Toho classic FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD, directed by Ishiro Honda with visual effects by helmed Eiji Tsuburaya. Like all of the entries in this new line, the smartly-designed packaging opens like a book (sealed with Velcro discs), containing an essay on the monster and the film on the inside, and on the opposite is a plastic window, revealing the figure and all of its accessories (including a RevolContainer with one RevolChip worth 10 Points — redeemable only in Japan).

Standing 4.33” high (or 7.87” long, from head to tail) this is an extremely detailed realization of Baragon (sculpted by the renown Paleoartist, Shinobu Matsumura), and comes complete and ready to display, with no interchangeable parts or add-ons necessary — but it does come with some clever accessories lifted referencing scenes from FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD. First of which is one of the mountaineering cabins of the fictitious Shirane Lodge, destroyed in Baragon’s entrance scene in film, with two trees for atmosphere, and a nameplate. Then there’s the horse. A horse? Why on earth is there a horse figure (with stand) in this set? “What’s up with that?” you might ask.

What’s great about this piece is the scene that it references from the film; after the destruction of the Shirane Lodge, Baragon attacks a small farm, and destroys a stable with a horse. The doomed animal was represented by a rod puppet, which was operated from beneath the miniature set, and looked exactly like… a rod puppet. When he was asked about this questionable technique by his assistant director, Teruyoshi Nakano, and why he employ a more realistic composite shot instead, veteran visual effects director Eiji Tsuburaya answered happily, “Because this is much more fun!” It’s a wry and very clever addition to this package by Kaiyodo.

Baragon itself is very nicely jointed, with 19 points of articulation, employing 13 Revoltech joints. Other articulated parts, such as the jaws and ears, do not employ Revoltech joints, while the neck is capable of an amazing amount of full-range movement. As for the arms, while the shoulders themselves are Revoltech-jointed, the wrists aren’t. Each leg has three points of articulation — the hip, the knee, and the foot — all Revoltech-jointed. An inner rod of flexible metal, inside of a long rubber-molded tail, allows some posing of this extremity (and is attached to a Revoltech joint inside the figure). Finally, Baragon’s signature glowing horn is simulated with frosted translucent plastic.

While I usually go for vinyl figures, I have been won over; this is a cool piece, from this excellent line, and will be a great addition to anyone’s monster collection (I’m looking forward to future releases) — and for those intimidated by the usually monstrous prices of most Japanese collectibles, the comparatively low cost of Kaiyodo’s Sci-Fi Revoltech line should keep you out of the poor house. For now…

On December 1st, SMAP’s Takuya Kimura appeared on stage for the sold-out opening screening of Takashi Yamazaki’s highly anticipated movie, SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO, at Toho Cinemas Nichigeki 1, in Tokyo’s Yurakucho neighborhood (Chiyoda Ward). Record ticket sales pushed the film into the #1 position at the Japanese box office on its first day of release — sending YAMATO right into orbit.

The opening date of the film alone is already something special, because in new movies in Japan usually open on Saturdays. However, December 1st is considered “Movie Day” (Eiga-no Hi), and so the producers were able to make this release special occasion and release it before the weekend. Kimura was in very high spirits at the opening ceremony today, as he said, “I hope that everyone will board the Yamato!”

During the on-stage opening ceremony, Toho Company, the film’s domestic distributor, announced that six countries have already secured the rights to YAMATO. France, Germany, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong will soon be prepping SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO to bow in their own territories. In addition, Toho revealed that they have already received several offers from American distributors as well — it seems that Yamato is about to boldly go around the world.

Kimura then appealed to future international moviegoers with these words, “I want to say to them, ‘Please enjoy this SF movie made in Japan,’ and show them that the Yamato is a big enough ship for everyone!”

At the end of the opening ceremony, Toho also openly challenged the current #1 film at the Japanese box office, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART I, declaring, “We’re aiming to break the 8 Billion Yen ($95 Million USD) mark, and surpass HARRY POTTER by the end of the year.”

To date, Kimura’s greatest box office success was Masayuki Suzuki's HERO (2007), which raked in a total of approximately 8.6 billion Yen ($102 Million USD). Can the Yamato step up to this challenge?

This coming spring, the man who played the original Godzilla — all the way from Japan — Haruo Nakajima, will stomp into Burbank for the third annual Monsterpalooza horror film celebration, taking place April 8, 9 & 10, 2011 at the Marriott Convention Center.

Taking up extra work at Toho Studios in the late 1940s, Mr. Nakajima appeared in numerous productions, including one of the bandits in Akira Kurosawa’s SEVEN SAMURAI (1954). After volunteering for the first Japanese fire stunt in the WW2 epic EAGLE OF THE PACIFIC (1953), the team prepping GODZILLA (1954) knew that he was the man for the job. From 1954 through 1972, Mr. Nakajima donned the heavy costumes to portray Godzilla, and a horde of other beasts, for film and television.

After 11 years, Mr. Nakajima will return to California to meet with his fans and sign autographs during the three-day Monsterpalooza event. He will also be speaking about his experiences in bringing these characters to life — including the various accidents and injuries he sustained while taking on the roles of Rodan, Varan, Baragon, Green Gargantua, and many other titanic terrors, as — arguably — the world’s foremost monster suit actor.

“Mr. Nakajima starred anonymously in one of the greatest movie franchises in history — from the somber allegories of the 1950s to the colorful monster mashes of the 1960s. For many westerners, these films stimulated an interest in Japan, with Godzilla serving as a surrogate cultural ambassador — largely thanks to his performances. Mr. Nakajima is a living legend, and bringing him to Monsterpalooza is an honor, and he’s looking forward to meeting American fans,” said August Ragone, author of Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters.

Monsterpalooza, organized by Eliot Brodsky, has quickly become the premiere gathering of fans of creature features in the US. Having hosted scores of actors from classic films, this will be the show’s first guest from Japan — a great opportunity for monster mavens to meet the one-and-only Godzilla himself, Haruo Nakajima — truly making this Monsterpalooza an international event!

This past Summer, a display of original costumes and props from the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the seminal SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO was held at the Sanrio Puroland in Tokyo's Tama New Town suburb. Then, during the Summer edition of the WonderFestival (or "Wonfes") garage kit and toy show at Makuhari Messe, two of the original miniatures used in the film were on display. The Cosmo Tiger, is a rethinking of the Black Tiger space fighters from the first SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO (1974), which manages to retain the basic design sense, while the enemy Gamilas Fighter, an arthropod-like design, is a vast departure from the original. The costumes for Takashi Yamazaki's upcoming SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO, opening in Japan on December 1st, were adapted by Anri Jojo (ALWAYS: SUNSET ON THIRD STREET), who helmed the production design for the film.

On Saturday, October 30th, editor of the national J-Pop mag Otaku USA, Patrick Macias and author of the lauded Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters, August Ragone respond to the Halloween call with a titanic tribute to the director of the original GODZILLA, Ishiro Honda.

With more than a nod towards the recently released book Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men: The Fantastic Cinema of Ishiro Honda by Peter Brothers, the provocative pair of kaiju fanboys contextualize Honda's prolific career with rare images and clips from classics of Japanese fantasy cinema such as RODAN, MOTHRA, THE MYSTERIANS, MONSTER ZERO, DESTROY ALL MONSTERS, ATRAGON, and BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE.
